Full Bust Lingerie Review: Ewa Michalak Sm Nana

The Ewa Michalak Nana is easily one of the best sets of 2013, one of the sexiest things I've ever put on my body and it's utterly unlike anything currently on the market for full bust women. The eponymous brand has had a strong season with the release of it's first babydoll, gorgeous new bridal pieces, and a fury of out-of-the-box prints. Over the summer, I read a few complaints (and might've done some complaining myself) that the soft cups they'd sporadically produced in the past had all but disappeared. The debut of their SM shape was a long awaited revival and since it's arrival, Ewa Michalak's sheer bras are a force to be reckoned with, both in fit and design. And with the exception of Miss Mandalay's Amelie and Cleo's Lori, they've blown right past the standard for sheer bras in Britain.  The Nana is the pinnacle of that achievement and in my opinion, Ms. Michalak deserves a round of applause.

I've always thought sheer bras the sexiest because they highlight my shape, rather than concealing or shaping it as padded bras do. I don't want lingerie to overwhelm my figure or rearrange the appearance of my bust, I like accenting what's already there. The Nana does an exceptional job of this through it's uniquely light mesh. It's color isn't translucent exactly, it's more of a faded mauve or muted beige (both of which are soft colors to begin with). Against my skin tone, the material seems to disappear and the graphic black lines, buttons, and lace begin to look painted or tattooed on. The Nana gives the impression that there's a lot less bra and a lot more girl. This isn't a revolutionary concept for the broader intimates apparel industry, but for the smaller and more traditional world of full bust lingerie, the idea is unheard of.

After all my fervor over it's design, the Nana offers a refreshingly consistent fit. I found the band and cup true to size; I've taken a 65FF/30FF in all the SM styles I've tried and the Nana is no exception. Like most Polish bras, the wires are narrower, the cups are a bit deeper, and the neckline is more revealing than your typical British plunge bra. I'm a huge fan of the SM fit, comfort and profile so these bras are in my weekly rotation. The Nana works as an everyday option if you're looking for a basic and it's lightweight feel will be especially useful during sweaty summer days, but I've elevated it into my extra special collection. You know, the lingerie you pull out when you're feeling particularly sassy.

After previewing a bunch of collections or wondering through the Curve exhibition, lingerie can begin to blend together. Full bust brands seem to take up a trend and sell it for a season, only to have a competitor riff off the same trend in the next season. The consistency of it all, the way it seems to play on a loop, can make even the most enthusiastic lingerie fan feel a little jaded. I can understand some of it, our basic "workhouse" bras have succeeded because they share a set of practical features so they're bound to look alike.  But I think there are full bust ladies out there (myself included), who'd like to see collections which bring something new to the table, designs that look as if they could've been torn out of a fashion magazine and products which don't seem to pigeonhole the target customer by age or attitude. The SM Nana scores on every one of those levels: it's fresh idea for the full bust market, it's certainly stylish enough for a celebrity photoshoot and it doesn't scream for a "flirty" or "conservative" customer. Three cheers for that.

  2. Gorgeous! Thanks for the great review (as always!)--

I'm curious if you have any shots of the bra by itself (not being worn) or know of where I could find such a thing. I'm very pale (common self-depreciating jokes involve me glowing in the dark, getting a moon-burn, or being casper's-long-lost-sister) and have never encountered a beige that didn't make me look very unhealthily washed out or stand out on my skin in a very obvious way. I'm hoping the mesh might be light enough that I won't look like I have a faded reverse spray tan like some other beige mesh/lace that I've tried has in the past.

Any chance there's photos of this material against white or not against skin somewhere? Thanks again, my EM wishlist grows even longer..

    1. Hey Meg, I'd be happy to add a photograph to the review of the bra against something white. The color is really hard to describe so I'm sure it would help a lot of people who are also looking to pick this style up. I'll update the post as soon as I'm able. :)

  4. i so want to buy this, but i am not sure on the sizing. i bought a CH Kolbalt a couple of months ago in 70G but it was a weird fit. everybody said EM bands are really thight so i went with 70 but i was kinda loose. so now i don't know if it just this bra or if i could go for 65 in general. i wrote a mail but they haven't answered.
    would you have any advice?

    1. Hello Selvi, I'd be happy to help. How was the CH Kolbalt a weird fit? Did you experience size problems like the cups were gaping or overspilling, or the band was too loose and you weren't getting proper support? Or was it a shape issue, like a plunge or soft bra usually works better on you?

In terms of running loose or tight, Ewa Michalak's product descriptions now include a line if the band is very firm. Like on this:

      http://www.ewa-michalak.pl/product-eng-489-SM-Czarodziejka.html

I've experienced a consistent fit from Ewa Michalak, with one or two outliers that had especially stretchy band material or the black bras, which tend to run tighter because the dye shrinks the fabric. To compare it to a British brand (which I don't recommend doing too often), I'd say that Ewa Michalak's 65 band mirrors Cleo's 30 bands. They're also supposed to fit comfortably so when you put it on the loosest hook and wear it for the first time, it should be comfortable right off the back. I've never had a "breaking in" period with their bands.

And FYI, I take a cup size larger in their padded bras (CHP, CH, PL, S) than I do in the soft shape (HM, SM). I'm a 65FF in the soft ones and a 65G in the padded styles.

      I hope this helps! :)

  5. While on the topic of EM, I just wanted to let everyone know I received my special order of the HM Malinka and I love it! They charged 199 PLN to make the SM Malinka into an HM, and they will do this with every SM bra. These special orders are non refundable, but since my size is consistent I didn't hesitate. After Christmas I'm going to order an HM Trefl!

    1. Allison, that's wonderful news! Thank you so much for sharing because last I'd heard, Windie Gardie (of Undiegamer) had requested a switch like that and they told her it couldn't be done. Since the HM is my favorite type of bra eeeeeva, I'm thrilled to hear it's possible. :D Are you one of Santa's helpers? Because you just gave me some holiday cheer.

    2. So glad I read this comment! Will have to try to order an HM bra again sometime :)

  6. I love Nana either... the same feelings go to Pompadour... but I love transparencies.:P
I usually don't really wear beige bras... I just don't like them, but Nana and Femme Fatale are an exception.

As far as the fit goes, IMO, most bras in this new collection are on the tight side, I have to wear my regular size with an extender (otherwise I feel as if caught in a vise)... Only Gazeta is kind of regular fit.

  7. Wow, the colour matches your skin just perfectly and the fit is nice, too.. Maybe I should give EM another look..

  8. I love sheer bra with an underwire, of course. The addition of the garter straps gives the set even that much more versatility, to be sure. I am smitten!

  9. I love all the Polish brands you put out there. But you wear your band too low, and I think too small. As a result of the placement of the underband, your shoulders look stiff as if they are doing more work than they should be. And you should go down a cup size or two because many of these bras look too big on you...
